It features a lightweight Pertex outer shell material bonded directly to the Alpha Direct. The Ascendant is remarkably lightweight and incredibly warm for its weight and volume. Of course, along with breathability comes less weather and wind protection, so if you choose the active insulation option, you still need to pack your shell. Previous synthetic insulations were less focused on air flow and required less-than-breathable linings to contain them in a jacket – think the nylon puffy we all own – great jackets, but not so breathable. Breathable Insulationīreathable synthetic insulation itself is not necessarily new. The innovation is that they are getting more breathable and can be bonded to or sandwiched between fabrics with high air permeability ratings. Once we get a few more days on the Proton LT, we’ll write it up too. Both pieces follow the lead of the Patagonia Nano Air that was introduced two years ago. Two pieces that turned our heads at this year’s show are the Arc’teryx Proton LT and the Outdoor Research Ascendant Hoodie. They excel in start-stop situations and when the weather is cold enough or windy enough that you need some insulation but don’t necessarily need a shell. They breathe better than most waterproof-breathable shells, so, depending on the weather conditions, you can actually wear them up and down while touring. If you’ve ever toured in your puffy jacket only to realize there was little balance between more insulation and breathability to vent heat and moisture, you will appreciate active insulation. What is active insulation, you ask? Well, it refers to insulated jackets that maintain breathability and air permeability, giving you the ability to wear them across a wider spectrum of aerobic/energy output levels. I think photographers and other people using cameras, video recorders, or other devices would like to use the tarp as a staging area where they could keep their equipment off the ground or protected from direct sunlight.One of the more interesting outerwear innovations in the last couple of seasons has been the advent of active insulation. This year’s OR show was abuzz with the term. In an emergency, the tarp is strong enough that it could be used to carry someone to safety. It’s also ideal for back of car/SUV covering for people who bring their dogs on outdoor adventures. Now the challenge is to part with both the quilt and sleeping bag because I no longer need them!īecause of the grommets, it would be easy to make a simple shelter with the tarp, rope, and some stakes.
Better, even though the water soaked through the sleeping bag, the tarp kept me totally dry. More room than the yoga mat, and the woven fabric has some purchase so I had no trouble with my planks. I used the sleeping bag against the ground since I didn’t want to get mud on my tarp, and placed the tarp on top. I use an old sleeping bag with a yoga mat on top, but the other day it occurred to me that the Rugged Style Tapestry Tarp would be a better option. It’s warm enough where I live to exercise outdoors in winter, but the grass is usually pretty wet and sometimes muddy. On its website Tarpestry suggests that if this happens consumers can spray the tarp with water-protective coatings sold at outdoor gear stores. I could put it in the washing machine, but over time that will break down the water-resistant coating. I can shake off debris, wipe off dirt with a damp cloth, or hose it down if it’s covered with mud, grass, or sand. The Rugged Style Tarpestry tarp is easy to clean. When I’m ready to leave everything I need is still safely stored in the pocket. When I’m on my tarp I can stash all those items in the pocket and just enjoy my picnic or yoga practice. I lose everything, so I have lanyards on my phone, keys, and wallet. One of my favorite parts of the Rugged Style Tarpestry tarp is the small corner pocket with the Velcro-like seal. Water beads off the tarp, making it ideal for picnics (people always spill) and providing cover when I need to dash from car to cabin in a deluge. I like this tough tarp because it’s much more durable than my old cotton bedspread, so I can use it on rocks, sand, wet grass, and other surfaces without tearing it or getting wet.
